Form 48489223 Edition 2
Storing the Hoist
1. Always store the hoist in a no load condition.
2. Wipe off all dirt and water.
3. Oil the chain, hook pins and hook latch pins.
4. Place in a dry location.
5. Before returning hoist to service, follow instructions for ‘Hoists Not In Regular Use‘. Refer to the “INSPECTION”
section on page 7.
INSTALLATION
Environment Conditions: KM hoists are designed to operate in ambient temperatures between 0°F (-18°C) and 130°F
(54°C).
Prior to installing hoist, carefully inspect it for possible shipping damage. The assembly and installation depends on
the local environment. The hoist must be suspended in a way that it can position itself freely.
Hoists are supplied fully lubricated from the factory. Lubrication of the load chain is recommended before initial hoist
operation.
The hoist shall be installed in locations that will allow movement of the operator to stay clear of the load, and the
locations where the length of the load chain will allow the load hook to rest on the floor or the lowest level on which
the load rests.
WARNING
A falling load can cause injury or death. Before installing refer to Product Safety Information Manual for
all sections of installation.
Depending on the model selected, the hoist may weigh more than 90 lbs. (41 kg). If parts of the hoist are
dropped, they can cause injury, death or property damage. Adequately support the hoist during
installation
CAUTION
Owners and users are advised to examine specific, local or other regulations, including American Society
of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and/or OSHA Regulations which may apply to a particular type of use of
this product before installing or putting product to use.
The supporting structures and load-attaching devices used in conjunction with this hoist must provide adequate
support to handle all hoist operations plus the weight of the hoist and attached equipment. This is the customer’s
responsibility. If in doubt, consult a registered structural engineer.
The KM Series manual chain hoist must be used in a vertical position to provide a straight line pull from top hook to
bottom hook. The hoist must be positioned so that it does not contact the support members when in use. When
operating in limited areas suitable lifting attachments or slings must be used to prevent the hoist body and hand chain
from being obstructed.
Initial Operating Checks
CAUTION
Ensure the hoist top and bottom hooks are properly rigged and the hook latches are engaged, prior to
use.
Operate the hoist with a test load (10% of rated capacity) by raising and lowering this load several times. Verify the
brake operation by lowering the same load to check load does not slip when lowering stops.
Form 48489223 Edition 2
5
NOTICE
Each time a load is lifted, the operation of the load brake should be checked by raising the load slightly
and stopping to ensure the brake will hold the load before proceeding to lift the load.
Familiarize operators and people responsible for hoist installation and service with ASME B30.16 specifications prior
to placing the unit into service. All the requirements of this specification, including testing should be met before
approving the hoist for operation.
OPERATION
It is recommended that the user and owner check all appropriate and applicable regulations before placing this product
into use. Refer to Product Safety Information Manual.
The hoist operator must be carefully instructed in his or her duties and must understand the operation of the hoist,
including a study of the manufacturer's literature. The operator must thoroughly understand proper methods of
hitching loads and should have a good attitude regarding safety. It is the operator's responsibility to refuse to operate
the hoist under unsafe conditions.
WARNING
Hoist is not designed or suitable for lifting, lowering or moving persons.
Never lift loads over people.
Hoist Operation
When facing hand chain side of hoist:
1. Pull down on the right hand chain (clockwise) to raise load.
2. Pull down on the left hand chain (counterclockwise) to lower load.
Make sure the hoist has an adequate length of load chain to raise or lower the load in a safe manner. Do not attempt
to lower the hoist beyond its limit.
On 20 ton KM Series hoists, use two operators, one on each of the two hand chains. To keep the load chain centered
in the block assemblies, operate the hoist units simultaneously and at the same speed. An equal amount of unloaded
chain must be maintained under each hoist body.
WARNING
Do not allow load chain, on 20 ton KM Series hoists, to accumulate on one side (under one hoist body).
Excessive loading to load chain anchor may occur resulting in a falling load which can cause severe injury,
death or property damage.
NOTICE
The clicking sound of the pawl on the ratchet gear is normal when a load is being raised.
Overload Clutch
Some hoists are equipped with a slip clutch. When trying to lift a load that exceeds capacity of hoist the hand chain
will rotate in the hoist body but the load will not be lifted.
6
Form 48489223 Edition 2
The overload clutch was set to slip at a nominal setting of 150% of rated load with a range of ±20%.
INSPECTION
Inspection information is based in part on American Standards of Mechanical Engineers Safety Codes B30.16.
WARNING
All new or repaired equipment should be inspected and tested by Ingersoll Rand trained technicians to
ensure safe operation at rated specifications before placing equipment in service.
Never use a hoist that inspection indicates is damaged.
Frequent and periodic inspections should be performed on equipment in regular service. Frequent inspections are
visual examinations performed by operators or Ingersoll Rand trained inspectors and include observations made
during routine equipment operation. Periodic inspections are thorough inspections conducted by Ingersoll Rand
trained technicians.
ASME B30.16 states inspection intervals depend upon the nature of the critical components of the equipment and the
severity of usage. Refer to ‘Inspection Classifications’ chart and ‘Maintenance Intervals’ chart in Product Maintenance
Information Manual for recommended maintenance intervals. Careful inspection on a regular basis will reveal
potentially dangerous conditions while still in the early stages, allowing corrective action to be taken before the
condition becomes dangerous.
Deficiencies revealed through inspection, or noted during operation, must be reported to designated personnel
trained in safety, operation and maintenance of this hoist. A determination as to whether a condition constitutes a
safety hazard must be decided, and the correction of noted safety hazards accomplished and documented by written
report before placing the hoist in service.
Frequent Inspection
On hoists in continuous service, frequent inspection should be made at the beginning of each shift. In addition, visual
inspections should be conducted during regular service for any damage or evidence of malfunction.
1.
Operations. Check for visual signs or abnormal noises which could indicate a potential problem. Do not operate
a hoist unless the chain feeds through the hoist and hook block smoothly. Listen for “clicking”, binding or
malfunctioning. The clicking sound of the pawl on the ratchet gear is normal when a load is being raised. If chain
binds, jumps, or is excessively noisy, clean and lubricate the chain. If problem persists, replace the chain. Do not
operate the hoist until all problems have been corrected. Check that hand chain moves freely and without binding
or excessive drag. Hook should stop moving when hand chain stops moving
2.
Hooks. Check for wear or damage, increased throat width, bent shank or twisting of the hook. Replace if hook
latch snaps past tip of hook. Check hooks swivel freely. Replace hooks which exceed the throat opening. Refer
to Dwg. MHP3272 on page 12, A. Throat Width. B. Distance between two indicator points. Replace hooks which
exceed a 10° twist. Refer to Dwg. MHP0111 on page 10, A. Twisted DO NOT USE; B. Normal Can Be Used. If hook
latch snaps past tip of hook, the hook is sprung and must be replaced. Refer to the latest edition of ASME B30.10
‘HOOKS‘ for additional information. Check hook support bearings for lubrication or damage. Ensure that they
swivel easily and smoothly. Refer to Product Maintenance Information Manual.
3.
Hook Latches. Check operation of the hook latches. Replace if necessary.
4.
Chain. Examine each of the links for bending, cracks in weld areas or shoulders, traverse nicks and gouges, weld
splatter, corrosion pits, striation (minute parallel lines) and chain wear, including bearing surfaces between chain
links (Refer to Dwg. MHP0102 on page 10). Replace a chain that fails any of the inspections. Check chain
lubrication and lubricate if necessary. Refer to “Load Chain” in section “LUBRICATION” on page 9.
CAUTION
The full extent of chain wear cannot be determined by visual inspection. At any indication of chain wear
inspect chain and load sheave in accordance with instructions in “Periodic Inspection.”
A worn load chain may cause damage to the load sheave. Inspect the load sheave and replace if damaged
or worn.
Form 48489223 Edition 2

5.
Load Chain Reeving. Ensure welds on standing links are away from the chain wheel. Reinstall chain if necessary.
Make sure chain is not capsized, twisted or kinked. Adjust as required. Refer to Dwg. MHP0043 on page 11, A.
Make certain bottom block has NOT been flipped through the chain falls.
6.
Labels and Tags. Check for presence and legibility of labels. Replace if damaged or missing.

Hoists Not in Regular Use
1. Equipment which has been idle for a period of one month or more, but less than six months, shall be given an
inspection conforming to the requirements of “Frequent Inspection” section on page 7 before being placed in
service.
2. Equipment which has been idle for a period of over six months shall be given a complete inspection conforming
with requirements of ‘Periodic Inspection‘ before being placed in service. Refer to Product Maintenance
Information Manual.
3. Standby equipment shall be inspected at least semiannually in accordance with requirements of ‘Frequent
Inspection‘.
LUBRICATION
To ensure continued satisfactory operation of the hoist, all points requiring lubrication must be serviced with correct
lubricant at the proper time interval as indicated for each assembly. Lubrication intervals recommended in the
Maintenance manual are based on intermittent service run time and if the hoist is operated more frequently a more
frequent lubrication schedule will be required. Also, lubricant types and change intervals are based on operation in
an environment relatively free of dust, moisture, and corrosive fumes. Use only those lubricants recommended. Other
lubricants may affect performance of hoist. Failure to observe this precaution may result in damage to the hoist and
it's associated components.
Thread lubricant or an antiseize compound use is recommended for threaded shafts, capscrews and nuts. Unless
otherwise stated, remove old lubricant, clean the part with an acid free solvent and apply a new coating of lubricant
to the part before assembly.
General Lubrication
Correct lubrication is one of the most important factors in maintaining efficient product operation
Recommended Lubricants

Load Chain
WARNING
Failure to maintain clean and well lubricated load chain may result in chain failure causing injury, death
or substantial property damage.
1. Lubricate each link of the load chain weekly, or more frequently, depending on severity of service. Apply new
lubricant over existing layer.
2. In severe applications or corrosive environments, lubricate more frequently than normal.
3. Lubricate hook and hook latch pivot points with the same lubricant used on the load chain.
4. To remove rust or abrasive dust build-up, clean chain with acid free solvent. After cleaning, lubricate the chain.

(American Society of Mechanical Engineers, ASME)
